STAYING POWER: CELEBRATING 20 YEAR OF HIPHOPHUIS

Hiphophuis celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2022 with the theme Staying Power. With this theme, we explore and celebrate on how to stay physically and mentally fit as individuals and as a community in a constantly changing world.

To reflect, celebrate and (re)imagine the future we chose to collaborate with British artist Lakwena, Kunsthal and Patta. Lakwena's work is an invitation to hope, perseverance, and inspiration. A much-needed and fitting visual language for our anniversary theme.

The collaboration consists of 3 layers that each will speak to different parts of our dynamic community; an exhibition, Powertalk and limited edition hoodie.

Following earlier collaborations – including the successful exhibition ‘Street Dreams’ –, we reconnect on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the Hiphophuis and the thirtieth anniversary of the Kunsthal. The artist Lakwena Maciver (1986, UK) has been invited to create new work as part of her series Jump Paintings.

Hiphophuis x Patta x Lakwena: Limited Edition Hoodie

For the 20th anniversary of Hiphophuis, Hiphophuis and Patta not only celebrate but also dive into the meaning of Staying Power and create a limited edition hoodie for our communities.

A Powertalk with Lakwena Maciver hosted by Farida Sedoc

For the PowerTalk, multidisciplinary visual artist Farida Sedoc will talk to Lakwena Maciver. Farida and Lakwena are both artists with a bicultural background and have an in-depth conversation about lived experiences, power dynamics in the art world in England and the Netherlands and an exchange takes place with the audience that is largely made up of creatives of color.
